Making Time for Learning – AFP’s Screening of UnCharitable

I’ll admit it. Whenever someone asks me how it’s going, my answer is “busy.” Then I run through the standard list: there’s always more to be done at work. I’m halfway through a master’s in communication (Two years down! Two to go!) And the dog’s three years old, but still very much a puppy, and still in need of constant attention. Sometimes there will also be a mention of a book club and a couple of pressing chores as well.
But when I saw AFP-GPC was doing a screening of UnCharitable, I didn’t hesitate to make the time to attend. While I hadn’t seen the documentary before, I knew it covered the constraints placed on nonprofits – like how overhead is seen as a wasteful expense rather than a necessary part of offering stellar programming. That topic is something I’m passionate about. Plus, it didn’t hurt that as an AFP member, the event was free of charge.
Walking into the event, I knew I’d see many AFP members I’ve met through prior events and through my committee service, and members of the Schultz & Williams team who were co-sponsoring the event and who provided insightful guidance when we contracted them at a prior job.
Beyond that, it was also a chance to meet new faces. Through pre- and post-movie networking, I discovered the challenges peers are tackling in their roles, and I learned more about organizations I was less familiar with, including the Wistar Institute. Not only did Wistar co-sponsor and welcome us into their building, but they shared information about the meaningful work they do in the biomedical sphere. I even kept some of the collateral they distributed, to serve as a model for my own materials.
For anyone who couldn’t make the film, I would highly recommend streaming it – and I’d also recommend joining AFP for future events. In the rush of everything going on in our lives, it’s so tough to carve out time to meet colleagues in our field and to discuss the pressing issues in our sector. With events like UnCharitable, I just have to register and show up, knowing that AFP has already done the legwork to arrange engaging programming and convene professionals from the greater Philadelphia region. Making the time for that is well worth it, and I can’t wait to see what the chapter does next.
